John 617@http://www.transitionipswich.org.uk/forum/
Re the thermal camera, all I'd say is we'd survey (pick a number) 100 households and give them advice on energy saving measures as a voluntary engagement project.

steve_m 615@http://www.transitionipswich.org.uk/forum/
Definitely up for a skillshare on solar led lighting - let me know if I can help organise it.

John - I think we'd need to specify exactly how we'd plan to use a thermal imaging camera before we could get the sort of funding required. What sort of project do you have in mind?

richard 609@http://www.transitionipswich.org.uk/forum/
The solar panels occasionally are on sale for about £40, I didn't pay £70 for mine. The reason they warn it won't charge a gel cell is if you just bridge it across the SLA battery you will overcharge it in summer (hence the charge controller).
The cable is available from Maplin - only the 15A is available in store but if you are ordering online go for the 20A version as it's only 10p a metre dearer. Note that Maplin isn't by any means the cheapest but they are in town and they do sell cut cable so you don't have to buy 100m drums.

The fuse panel I got from Motormania, and I thought I got ripped for about £6 but Maplin charge £25 for a 6-way one. You can get this sort of thing from caravan dealers and also the sort of place that caters to Gary boys pimping their rides... You could also use the fuseboard from a car scrapyard, you get a nice selection of fuses with it then.

joanne 608@http://www.transitionipswich.org.uk/forum/
hi John,

The electricity meters are one like this at £40 and one like this at £20 to give a kit that people can use to really root out any electricity use waste in the home.

I've just been through Richard's page about the solar 12v system shouting upstairs to the chap himself when I didn't quite follow the teckiness!

This is a summary of the parts needed for one installation (all prices for items bought singly, rounded to the nearest £, including VAT):

a suitable lamp, this one locally available from B&Q at £26

solar panel from maplin, currently £70
battery, price for one approx £27

MPPT controller approx £30

Fuse panel & cables approx £20

I hope this helps :)

cheers,
Joanne

richard 607@http://www.transitionipswich.org.uk/forum/
Okay, I have a write up of the solar 12V project up on the website here

Is this the sort of thing people are interested in? I've tried to be straight up about what it can and can't do for people - it will give you light but not run your house!

John 601@http://www.transitionipswich.org.uk/forum/
I like the 12v DC solar idea.

Also how about getting a thermal imaging camera?

On the woodfuel, I think people need to know how to burn it as well (hot and fast, not cold and slow).

I can help write a bid if Richard gave me a list of parts and costs.

steve_m 598@http://www.transitionipswich.org.uk/forum/
Great ideas - guess the next step is for someone to put together a short propsal e.g. how much dosh is needed to enable TI to raise awareness, share skills & demonstrate what can be done? I've had enough of writing proposals over the last few weeks but I'd be happy to review a draft.

alex 597@http://www.transitionipswich.org.uk/forum/
I think both the 12v power and use of meters are good projects, perhaps targeted at younger people. A portable renewable DC power system will be a useful thing to have for the "Transition Zone" as well as a practical demonstraion that solar power is viable..

joanne 596@http://www.transitionipswich.org.uk/forum/
A couple of ideas Richard & I have been thinking about are:

1) A session showing people how to set up a stand alone 12v solar lighting/laptop circuit powered by the (relatively) cheap solar panels that Maplin sells for £40ish from time to time.
2) A session using a couple of different energy meters to track down and reduce high electricity loads. We've reduced our electricity consumption loads by tracking down which appliances are a constant or excessive drain, and saved lots of money in the process. We'd need a venue with appliances to monitor!

Could either of these be of interest? If the Energy Savings Trust could fund some meters and/or solar panels+batteries+charge controllers so people could put these ideas into practise at home then that would be a big help in getting this stuff into practise.

On another front, I would be happy to talk about preparing, seasoning and using firewood if that could be of interest? The tools to use, how long to dry it for, and how, why you need to bother etc etc.

cheers,
Joanne
